The Pumpkin Spice Gospel

“You are the salt of the earth.  But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?  It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”  Matthew 5:13

Do you think Christians are boring?  What is your favorite flavor or flavoring?  Do you have a favorite Pumpkin Spice food or drink?

Humdrum, boring, lifeless, and dull are words used to describe rice cakes, tax returns, and slow Wi-Fi.  These are not the words to describe the Christian life.  God calls us to be “the salt of the earth.” The ones who represent and give flavor to a life that is anything but commonplace.

We were created to show the world the majestic love of Jesus Christ.  The One who made the Great Barrier Reef.  The One who created the Redwood Forest.  The One who paved the Milky Way and created an all-natural light show called the Northern Lights!

As flavorful Christians, we can show the world the majestic love of God by investing in them. By showing others, they are seen and loved by the God who created them to be even more precious than all of the wonders of the world.  In doing so, we are putting the flavor, Pumpkin Spice, salt or other, into Christian living.

If you think this life of servitude is boring, take a look at a few flavorful Christians that have gone before you:  Corrie Ten Boom, a trained watchmaker, and Christian helped over 800 Jews escape the Nazi Holocaust by hiding them in her closet!

The measure of a life, after all, is not its duration, but its donation – Corrie ten Boom

Mother Teresa, known not for her calling as a Nun, but as being one of the great humanitarians of the 20th century. She could love those that were the most vulnerable in society that brought out the flavor of the Christian life.

Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier. – Mother Teresa

When we are true to our calling, to being the person God created us to be, we bring out the true essence of the gospel.  God has given each of us gifts to use in sharing the essence or flavor of Christian living with others. If we were to rely only on the flavor of self-serving ambitions, we would taste very bland, if not sour.

How are you going to flavor your words, actions, and prayers today to show others how savory Christian living can be?

Heavenly Father may we be the salt of the earth, the flavoring of Your love today.  May we worship you in the spirit of a new season.  Inspire us to serve well, to take the risk, and to be adventurous in our Christian lives. In your precious name, we pray.  Amen
