How to Laugh Without Fear of the Future

She is clothed in strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. Proverbs 31:25 (NIV)

August 15th is the day I have been dreading for some time now. It also the day I have spent the past 18 years preparing for. The countdown is on, only two and a half months until our youngest son leaves for college.

Will I stand by the car, turn around one last time, wave bravely to him, and laugh without fear of the future? Will my face show strength and confidence in his choice to live so far from home? Or will I crumble under the uncertainty of the future?

Women tend to be worriers. We worry about both the essential and the non-essential.

Is my child safe behind the wheel? Do these shoes look good with this dress? Did I turn the oven off? How can we afford this? Will my son make wise choices?

Consider the Ravens

Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn, yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Luke 12:24 (NIV)

Am I worrying for nothing? Of course, God’s taking care of this! Why wouldn’t He? Just like I have planned and prepared Joel for take off, so has God.

So, rather than fretting over if he is eating healthy, scrubbing his toilet or passing College English, I will remember the raven and know God is true, kind and generous with all of His children.

I want to stand with the woman in Proverbs 31 and laugh at the future, whatever it has in store. I want to turn my worry lines into laugh lines.

Turn Your Worry Lines into Laugh Lines!

How does laughter prepare you for the inevitable moment when uncertainty crashes into our souls? Will fear retreat on its own? What will cause anxiety to flee? Let’s look at three ways to abandon worry and embrace the life of laughter.

  1. Laugh like your Father in heaven does. – Psalm 2 tells us the Lord laughs at his enemies. “The One enthroned in heaven laughs.” We too can laugh at our enemies, at our fear and anxieties. We are daughters of the King, and He will protect our hearts and soul.
  2. Laugh like the righteous – In Psalm 52, we hear about the righteous person who can laugh at the one who failed to seek refuge in the Lord. As women who have clothed ourselves in the strength of the Lord, we can be certain we are safe from the uncertainty of the future when we take refuge under the wing of the Mighty One.
  3. Laugh like Children of GodRomans 8 verifies we are children of God, and not only children but heirs and as heirs of God, we will be glorified with Him. What better reason to concede to the laughter on our lips?

Life Begins Where Fear Ends

When we laugh at our fears and anxieties, we diminish their power. We take back the strength of knowing God. When we sit giggling under the wings of the Almighty, because we know He is taking care of us, we can have fun in this life. When we concede to laughing like children of God, we abandon the chains of anxiety and genuinely enjoy life.

Let’s wrap the clothing of strength and dignity tightly around us as we watch those worry lines fade, and the laugh lines spread. No matter what the future holds.

Heavenly Father whose strength, we wear with dignity. Thank you for the future, whatever it may hold. We pray for your assurances as we look to the future with a heart of joy. Be with us as we explore new terrains and uncover fresh ground. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
