Four Benefits to Choosing a Word of the Year
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21
As we start out a new year and are making goals and resolutions, I bulk at the overwhelming pressure to fix what has been broken. Resolutions are usually based upon things we don’t like about ourselves, those parts of us that feel broken. Another resolution will not fix what has been lacking for so long. What we need is a solution that makes room for growth and sets us up for success versus rules that demand perfectionism.
We have the choice to speak life or death. So what if we were intentional about the words we spoke over ourselves? What if we created a One Word Mantra to profess over our lives for an entire year? Can you see the potential for growth and transformation with this practice?
What ONE WORD would you like to profess this year to change your heart? Words contain energy, imagery, and meaning that our hearts and souls get excited about, and that brings about transformation.
For by your words you will be justified
Four reasons to pick a Word of the Year.
- It brings focus and clarity to your goals
- It becomes a simple mantra to guide you
- It replaces the focus from what is broken to what is possible
- It is forward thinking
The art of choosing your ONE WORD is simple:
- Pray about it and ask God to reveal to you what that ONE WORD is.
- Write a list of all words that are calling out to you, do not overthink this, just write. If you want some help, HERE is a list of inspiring words I put together for you.
- Pay attention–I will notice a recurring theme in my life and a word that stands out to me more than others in many venues. Yes, mostly in the Word of God, but in other places too.
- Let it find you–When the right word comes into your mind, it will just feel right, you find that it makes itself at home in your soul. So, take a leap of faith and go with it.
- Be patient–sometimes this process will take me several weeks to flesh out the ONE WORD
If you would like to find your ONE WORD another way, I love how this site has created a program to help you find your ONE WORD by answering 7 questions: DaySpring 2021 Word Finder

- Write it down! Put it in your Bullet Journal, use scrapbooking supplies to make it into art, post it on your refrigerator. Just make it visible.
- Find your word in His Word–find a couple of bible verses that will anchor your Word to His word
- Create a reading list of books that support your word
- Create a vision board
- Find quotes that include your WORD and use them throughout the year
So, I bet you are wondering what my ONE WORD is. Well….Drum roll, please……..
I would love it if you left your ONE WORD in the comments below, I will end us in prayer as we prepare to embrace our word and seal it with His Word for a new year.
Heavenly Father, we lean into your Word and seek your heart as we prepare for the upcoming year. We ask that you would give us wisdom, knowledge, and understanding as we seek your heart for our ONE WORD this year. May our minds be blessed and our hearts a reflection of your nature. In the name of the Father that speaks love over us. Amen.
