Scorched Feet

“Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? Proverbs 6:28 NIV

Do you think some sins are worse than others?  Have you ever tried to reason with God about something that is desirable but questionable?  A wise man is telling us all sin will burn us in the end.

Honestly, sometimes sin just feels right.  Hebrews 11:25 calls this “enjoying the fleeting pleasure of sin. ”  I really like overeating, and I really hate dieting.  I am always starting a new diet plan, but indeed I just continue to try to find new ways to enjoy the sin of gluttony without having to pay for it.

The devils’ bait taste just like donuts.

It might be tempting to judge one person’s sin as worse than another’s because of the degree of seriousness.  After all stealing a pack of gum has vastly different consequences than killing someone in a drunk driving accident.

Even the Bible will tell us not all sins are equal.  Matthew 12:31 says ” And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.”

The idea that all sins are equal in God’s eyes comes from the fact that all sin separates us from God, therefore leads to death.  Romans 3:23 tells us “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” and James 2:10 says “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.”

But the bottom line is that all sin will have an effect on us, it will burn us in one way or another.  It may be instant, or it may sneak up on us from behind.  The good news is God is in the business of forgiveness.  “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins” 1 John 1:9.  He doesn’t hold grudges, he allows us to be completely free of the confessed and forgiven sin.

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our sins from us.” Psalm 103:12

Heavenly Father we confess our sins to you now so that we may keep from having scorched feet.  We praise your holy name for the sacrifice you made on the cross that we may live a redeemed life free from the shackles of sin.  Convict us of any hidden sin in our lives so that we may experience true freedom with you.  Lord, hear my prayers.  Amen
