I am My Fathers Daughter
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12 (ESV)
When I was pregnant with our first child, we talked a lot about what he might look like. We joked about hoping he did not inherit his grandfather’s hairline and prayed he would have his dad’s brains and my sense of humor.
One of the first pictures we took of Kyle was this one:
This is three generations of Hampton’s. As you can see, there is no denying Kyle is his father’s son, and Richard is his father’s son.
The Man – The Myth – The Legend
Becoming a Father was one of the best days of Richard’s life. He became the man our children called Daddy. He became The Man – The Myth – The Legend!
What might an ideal father look like?
An ideal father would create a shared history and pass down stories from one generation to another. This is exactly what the Bible does. Often as parables: a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in the Gospels. Often as the true events of history.
Richard would often share the stories of his many four-wheeler riding mishaps or being forced to walk on an unknown broken leg for weeks on end. I am pretty sure the stories got more dramatic as the years passed. But they served the purpose of making a point.
An ideal father will protect his children.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4 (NIV)
Our heavenly Father is our protector, our shepherd, and our safeguard. An ideal father will also step in and protect his family from harm.
Richard recited the legendary “Pitch Fork” Story every time the boys tried to do something dangerous. (Richard and his friend threw pitchforks at each other for fun, and Richard lost. One landed in his forehead!) This was his way of warning our children of potential dangers ahead.
Families give us a place to belong.
All these things are marks of belonging to a family. Family members have titles, pass down stories, and create legends to be shared over and over again.
We all belong to God’s family. We are children of God, and we have a Father in heaven. One of my favorite titles for Him is:
Abba Father
This name of God is rich with meaning and implications for our lives.
“And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba Father!’” Galatians 4:6 (NIV)
This is the name of God that matches closes to Daddy. You belong to His family. Your Abba Father speaks words of life over every one of us and in all our stories.
An ideal father will speak life over their children.
Who do you say you are? Are you your Father’s Daughter or Son? Do you know you are a member of the family of God? That your Father in heaven has spoken ownership over you and claimed you as His own?
Whether you have a loving earthly Father, who has spoken words of life over you or not, you have a heavenly Father who always will.
Let’s take a look at some of the things God says about you.
You are who God says you are.
- You are uniquely created by your Father. (Psalm 139:13)
- You are loved with an everlasting love. (Jeremiah 31:3)
- You are precious, and you were bought with a price. (1 Corinthians 6:20)
- You are important, a chosen people and a royal priesthood. (1 Peter 2:9)
- YOU ARE FAMILY! (Ephesians 2:19)

Heavenly Father, thank you for adopting me, for paying the ransom for my freedom. I am a child of God, thank you that in your house there is a place for me. You have chosen me and claimed me as your own. I proclaim you as my Abba Father and thank you for speaking life over and into me. Your unique, loved, precious, important daughter loves you. In Jesus’ name. Amen
