Whose Voice Are You Hearing in Your Head?

I will listen to what God the LORD says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants–but let them not turn to folly. Psalm 85:8

Standing in the driveway, tasting dust mixed with tears of abandonment, I wondered if God even cared about me. Did I matter to Him at all? Did He notice me standing here alone and heartbroken? The departure of the person I trusted the most in life wrecked me.

It was not audible, but it was a distinct, clear voice. The message hit my heart like a dagger, and I was bleeding out as the realization of what I heard set in. I was not worth staying for. As an adult child of divorce, I experienced the trauma of abandonment, at an age I thought I should have been able to handle it. But I was not prepared for the unexpected event. To make matters worse, I couldn’t stop it. This is the exact definition of trauma. An unexpected event you are not prepared to handle and have no control over creates trauma.

Whose voice are you hearing in your head?

The enemy knew how to wound me. The first voice I heard was the enemy shouting and laughing at me, calling me unworthy. He will do anything to make his voice the loudest one in your mind. But God wants us to be alert to His voice. You know His voice; you know what it feels like. It is the voice that calms you down and brings peace to any situation.

God’s voice is encouraging, laced with hope, and feels like peace. His voice will remind you of His love and your worth. His voice strengthens you. The enemy tries to silence the truth, but you are powerful and resilient. You can stand strong and not permit the voices of negativity to matter to you.

The grace of God, poured out in blood at the cross, is our measuring tool. You are so worth dying for; you matter more than you can imagine. God will never leave you. He will walk through trauma with you, carrying you more often than you realize, holding you up, healing, and strengthening you.

Although the enemy screamed at me that day, God swept in to rescue me. Since then I have been practicing how to recognize the voice of truth over lies, and I am so much stronger because of it. And you will be too!

Heavenly Father, I’ll listen carefully for your voice and wait to hear what you say. Let me hear your promises of peace, the message I long to hear. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Isaiah 41:9-10 – I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

John 14:16-17 – And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
